When evaluating the level of contamination in soils or slicks, our geo-chemists and hydrogeologists carry out an in-depth analysis and carefully choose the methods which will deliver the best possible results, in the most cost-effective manner.

During every stage of the process of decontaminating a site, Tractebel Engineering acquires the maximum possible knowledge about the site, making sure that the companies carrying out the remediation work strictly comply with the legal obligations.

Our studies include the following:

  • Exploratory study: based on historical information available on the former uses of the site, an initial assessment is carried out of the potentially hazardous toxic materials or substances present
  • Characterisation study: using deep sampling methods, quantitative data is collected with the aim of characterising and defining the type of contamination in detail (nature and geometry)
  • Risk assessment: the data is analysed quantitatively to assess the source of pollution, the displacement mechanisms and the targets’ exposure level. This makes it possible to assess whether the risk is acceptable and remediation work is required. The risk assessment results in a proposal stating objectives and remediation methods to be used, a budget and an assessment of the benefits in order to determine the suitability of the work
  • Remediation phase: we expect to define the contractual requirements, help select the companies to carry out the task and supervise the remediation being carried out.
  • Remediation assessment: we analyse the remediation carried out, draft legal documents and compile the remediation report.
