In collaboration with the well-known architects Johan Otto Von Spreckelsen, Paul Andreu and François Deslaugiers, Tractebel did the structural and conceptual design of the renowned ‘Grande Arche’ at La Défense in Paris (geotechnics, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and structural steelwork). We also supervised the construction works.
The building has a total floor area of 220,000m². The 110m³ structure rests entirely on neoprene foundation pads.
Both the design and the construction of the Grand Arch were an opportunity to address numerous technical challenges. We made structural amendments to the preliminary sketches in order to retain the original concept: “an open cube, a window on the world”. We recommended industrial-scale use of high-performance concrete for the first time in France.
Tractebel provided first-rate project management, while assuring the quality of the technical works. The purity of the geometrical form of the Arch, its impression of airiness and lightness, and the linearity of the façades testify to the fulfilment of its commitments.
